THE 12TH ANNUAL
Glen Park Festival
A NEIGHBORHOOD TRADITION TO SUPPORT THE GLEN PARK COMMUNITY
SUNDAY, APRIL 25, 2010
10AM to 4:30PM on DIAMOND STREET
Glen Park has felt like a neighborhood for a very long time. In fact, the first Glen Park all-neighborhood gathering took place 90 years ago, in 1911!
But the modern-day Festival came to life in 1997, created by a group of neighbors who had been talking about the neighborhood's many artists and craftspeople. "Wouldn't it be great for them to come together to exhibit their work in Glen Park?" the conversation went. "How about a street fair?" Thus, the Glen Park Festival began.
Since then, the Festival has evolved from a folksy, spontaneous neighborhood get-together to a well-planned annual event that combines fun and community support. The Festival brings residents, neighbors and friends together for a day of entertainment, music, dancing, and good food. The day promotes neighborhood restaurants and artists and craftspeople, both from Glen Park and well beyond.
But it does something more: The Glen Park Festival raises money for children's programs based in Glen Park. In 2009, the Festival provided funds for books, supplies and equipment for Aidan's Way Afterschool Program and new playground equipment for Fairmount Elementary School. Festival proceeds also helped purchase a new bike rack for St. Paul's School and classroom equipment for two neighborhood preschools (Glenridge Cooperative Nursery School and Escuela Pachamama), and enabled the Glen Park Library to purchase a graphic novel collection and hire special performers. Applications for grants from the 2010 festival will be accepted beginning in March 2010; check back here to apply. Donations are accepted anytime, and a recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, all contributions to the festival are tax-deductible.
The artists and craftspeople are so popular that many come back year after year, and the entertainment and food are as eclectic as the neighborhood!
It doesn't matter whether you're from Glen Park or Glendora — you'll feel like part of the neighborhood. The Glen Park Festival is a great time and a great cause! We hope you'll join us on Sunday, April 25th.
The festival is held right in the Glen Park village, along Diamond Street between Bosworth and Chenery, as well as extending down Wilder street. Chances are, if you live in the neighborhood you pass through here most every day. If you're visiting for the day, you might want a picture:
The Glen Park BART station is right across the street and will be running Sunday hours during the festival. The MUNI routes 44 O'Shaugnessy, 36 Teresita and 52 Excelsior also pass right by; the J Church metro line is a block away.
