THE 12TH ANNUAL
Glen Park Festival
A NEIGHBORHOOD TRADITION TO SUPPORT THE GLEN PARK COMMUNITY
SUNDAY, APRIL 25, 2010
10AM to 4:30PM on DIAMOND STREET
Found at events of all sorts in and around San Francisco, DJ Dan is a recurring MC at the Festival, and will be managing the mic all day to usher in a great show.
Solo percussionist Lars Laperal returns to the Glen Park Festival after wowing audiences in 2005 with his performance of Hoobastank's "The Reason." Lars, now nine, started playing drums with his dad when the younger Laperal was just two. Come out to see how his skills have blossomed - and find out whether his younger sister, Arryan, will join him for a duet or two.
Musicians Jill Pierce and Tamsen Fynn have blended up a tasty musical confection for children of all ages, borrowing liberally from jazz, folk, bluegrass, and blues. Between them, Pierce and Fynn have studied both music education and child development, lending Orange Sherbet's tunes a little something special, drawing kids into their special magic. As you listen to the tracks from their third album, "Big Brother, Big Sister," you'll hear snatches of famous American tunes mixed together with educational concepts, catchy melodies and fun, danceable rhythms. Orange Sherbet's sound is also complex enough to catch the ear of the adults in the audience, inviting everyone to sing and groove along.
Festivalgoers in the mood for a swirl of country, rock, blues and soul are in for a treat when Los Train Wreck hits the stage. LTW has been a fixture at the El Rio for the past few years, where the band has hosted monthly "Roots Music Salons" featuring improvisational jams with a ragtag bunch of local musicians. They'll bring those jams to the Glen Park stage, where guitar and pedal steel will weave a magic spell. Expect a spontaneous performance that invites plenty of audience participation.
Rockabilly fans will be able to drink their fill when Whisky Pills Fiasco takes the stage at the Glen Park Festival. Hailing from Georgia, band leader Whisky Pills steers the band through a raucous journey lush with slide guitar, rumbling bass and even an authentic washboard. While songs like "Sunnyville" and "B-Side Sam" evoke down-home country, others, such as "12-Pack Pretty," hold echoes of modern blues-rockers, including George Thoroughgood. Put on your boots.
Valeriana Quevedo is a master jazz and soul singer, having performed on San Francisco stages in "Beach Blanket Babylon" and "West Side Story." With the Cincopaters, Quevedo croons English and Spanish favorites from the 1950s to today, including “I Will Survive,” “Black Magic Woman,” and “Lonely Tear Drops,” in three-part harmonies. She's been dancing from the age of five, so expect her to take a few turns across the stage during her Glen Park performance. In fact, she bets she'll have you dancing, too.
The San Francisco chapter of the RSCDS will introduce Glen Park audiences to this style of traditional ballroom dancing, performed by partners to a variety of Scottish reels, hornpipes and strathspeys. During their performance, dancers will teach the audience an easy dance that will have everyone kicking up their heels.
Led by Marilou Hibaldo, this troupe of Bay Area dancers will storm the stage with their spectacular show of Hawaiian and Polynesian dance moves. The group is a mainstay of the Glen Park Festival, bringing a touch of the tropics to our little village.
